i.What Wave does well
Wave is a Canadian product (owned by H&R Block since 2019) that built its reputation as truly free accounting software. The basics are still genuinely free:
- Unlimited invoicing on the free tier (this is real and remains so)
- Unlimited expense and income tracking
- Bank feed connection (US and Canadian banks)
- Receipt scanning (now a paid add-on, was free)
- Standard accounting reports (P&L, balance sheet, etc.)

For US and Canadian small businesses that want web-based accounting and don't mind paying for payment processing, Wave still works.

- Pro plan added. Features that were free now require a $16 USD/mo subscription - removing branding from invoices, receipt scanning, advanced expense automation, batch payments.
- Payment processing markup. 1% on ACH and 2.9% + 60¢ on credit cards is industry-standard, but it's how Wave actually makes money. The "free" software is the funnel for the paid processor.
- Bookkeeping upsell. Wave Advisors offers bookkeeping starting at $149/mo - persistent in the app UX.
- Sunset of products. Wave Apps shut down standalone mobile app, then revived it - inconsistent product direction has eroded trust.
- Account-locked data. Same as any cloud product - your data is in their cloud, behind their login.
- Limited geographic support. Bank feed and payments mostly work for US and Canada. UK/Australia/India users have a degraded experience.

Does VioBusiness do everything Wave does?
No. VioBusiness focuses on invoicing, quotes, contracts, expenses, and customer management. It doesn't do double-entry accounting, P&L reports, bank feeds, or payment processing. For freelancers and microbusinesses who hand off the accounting to an accountant once a year, that's a feature, not a bug.
How does payment work without Wave Payments?
You add your existing payment instructions to the Business Profile - bank details for wire/ACH, Wise email, PayPal link, Stripe checkout URL. They appear on every invoice. Most freelancers find this works just as well as integrated payments because clients pay through whatever channel they prefer anyway.
